August 9, 2005...Annual Apsaalooke Youth Camp
Nearly 65 (approx. 50 kids and 13 adults) people were in attendance on August 9, 2005 at the beautiful Apsaalooke Youth Camp. I spoke about the 5 main indoor asthma triggers (dustmites, pets, mold, pests, and secondhand smoke) that the Native AIR program focuses on and how to eliminate them from the home environment. We then discussed the Native AIR materials how best to utilize them.
Special THANKS to... Latonna Old Elk (Little Big Horn College Extension Service); Sharon Peregoy (Crow Tobacco Use Prevention Program Specialist); and Darrin Old Coyote (Vice Secretary, Crow Tribe of Indians) for the opportunity to share the Native AIR program with the kids and adults at the 2nd Annual Apsaalooke Youth Leadership Camp!! |

May 10-12, 2005...2005 River Honoring
May 10th 2005 kicked off the annual 2005 River Honoring ceremony on the Flathead Reservation just outside of Ronan, MT. The gathering began with an announcement of and presentation to the 2005 River Honorees. Drumming & singing followed the awards presentation and a barbeque, prepared by Salish Kootenai College's Three Wolves staff, concluded the community gathering. Hosted by The Natural Resources Dept., the public was invited to attend the opening of the 2005 River Honoring.
On May 11-12, 2005 nearly 1,000 4th & 5th graders traveled from all across the Reservation to attend the River Honoring. This 2-day environmental education event provides an opportunity to increase public awareness, education and community involvement in the preservation of natural an cultural resources on the Lower Flathead River. The River Honoring combines tribal and community resource specialists and educators such as representatives from fisheries, wildlife, wildland recreation, water quality, air quality, forestry, Native American traditional games, preventative health education, and shoreline protection programs. Educational programs will demonstrate projects and activities that educate students about the river and its ecosystem.
Special THANKS to... Margene Asay (Tribal Health Educator) and The Natural Resources Department of the Confederated Salish Kootenai Tribes of Flathead Indian Reservation, for understanding the importance of asthma education and including Native AIR in the planning of the 2005 River Honoring event!!

August 5, 2005...Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority Housing Fair Pablo, MT was the site for this year's Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority Housing Fair on August 5, 2005. This fair serves as an opportunity to educate the Flathead Reservation residents about all aspects of health and their environment. Information booths were setup all around the Housing Authority building and the public was invited to visit the booths and take advantage of the wonderful array of information provided. Some of the booths included: homeownership education (ie., how to get a loan, types of home insurance, home repairs, etc.), Kids Events (ie., bike safety, fire safety, etc.), Tribal Health (asthma education, nursing care, diabetes care, blood pressure screening, etc.) and more. Approximately 94 adults and 97 children visited the Native AIR booth. We talked with many people about the asthma problems they live with and the easy things they can do to make their home environment a healthier one.
Special THANKS to... Margene Asay (Tribal Health Educator), and the Salish & Kootenai Housing Authority for allowing Native AIR to be a part of this event!

July 19, 2005...Northern Cheyenne Youth Respect Camp Every summer, an active Tribal Elder on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Richard Tall Bull, coordinates a Youth Respect Camp. The idea is to have children learn valuable leadership skills by understanding the importance of respect; respect for people, the land, and everything the Creator blesses them with. They also had an opportunity to have a lot fun. When I arrived at the camp, the adults and children were making their way back on horseback. As they appeared from over a small hill, I saw each child on their own horse. Some of the kids were riding in a small horse-drawn wagon. They're cheeks were flushed from the heat and the smiles they wore stretched from ear to ear. There were approximately 21 children and 14 adults in attendance. I spoke to the children about asthma, asthma triggers, and easy ways to eliminate asthma triggers from the home environment. |

| April 26, 2005... Native AIR in-school education sessions were conducted with the 2nd, 4th, and 5th graders in Box Elder, MT. Asthma trigger information was shared with approximately 75 students and 15 school staff (ie., teachers, teacher aides, superintendent, etc.). Many of the students were familiar with asthma and could name a couple of the asthma triggers that the Native AIR project focuses on. All the students were asked to work closely with their parents in assessing their own homes for the presence of asthma triggers. We reviewed the Native AIR materials with the students and discussed the best ways to utilize the materials. |
